Eat, Drink, Shop, and Play at Hayfields Market

The North Salem hybrid business is part nursery, café, grocery, gift shop, and even after-hours hangout for trivia and live music.

What does a balaniferous tree produce? If you know the answer, you will probably do well at Hayfields Market’s Trivia night. If you don’t know, don’t worry. One of the hardest questions, it actually stumped the large crowd at this somewhat strange but wonderful hybrid of nursery, gift shop, farmers’ market, gourmet grocery, and café in North Salem.

Most recently adding beer and wine, Hayfields has something for everyone. And “everyone” goes there, says owner Renae Dayton, who, since buying the place in 2015, has succeeded in turning the quaint market with a foodie menu (think homemade sausage in the breakfast sandwiches, shallot aioli on the turkey wrap, and North Salem-grown lettuce and tomatoes on summer BLTs) into a community hub.

In addition to breakfast and lunch, (made with local ingredients whenever possible/seasonal), Hayfields has added live music and trivia nights, outdoor barbecue and band Fridays during warm weather, and Coffee and Car Sundays as a cool hang for area automotive enthusiasts. (Dayton is a Texas transplant, moving east 10 years ago. While working at Lime Rock Park raceway in Connecticut, she met her husband, noted racecar driver and North Salem resident Duncan Dayton.)

Oh, and the trivia answer is acorns … balaniferous means bearing acorns. Who knew?  Check out the website for scheduled events. With artisanal products for sale, books for borrowing, and the garden shop stocked for each season, Hayfields is possibly best described as a modern-day general store. Whatever you call it, it’s perfect for North Salem, which is big on open space, but lacks a proper village.
