With four locations around the region (the latest, in Lake Katrine, opened in August 2014), Dallas Hot Wieners has been in operation since 1927. Today, the family-run business still revolves around a single recipe for a “secret sauce,” which transforms boiled hot dogs into tasty meals. Go for the Dallas Hot Wiener with everything — that is, secret sauce topped with a ribbon of mustard and a sprinkling of onion for just $1.75, tax included (cash only). Make it a cheese dog for 50 cents more. If you get a hankering for the secret sauce after hours, you can always bring home a pint for $5. Note: This thin meat sauce is nicely spiced and takes a moment to kick in. And not only does it top off hot dogs, it also makes a good foil for burgers and fries, also on the menu.
If not everyone in your group is a dog person, gyros, souvlaki, and other Greek specialties are available at all except the original North Front Street location in Kingston, which has a decidedly retro air, complete with a charming yellow vintage tin ceiling. Here on a recent weekday afternoon, the counter and booths (which seat about 30) were filled with businessmen in suits, local contractors on break, mothers with young children. Closed Sunday (Kingston). 845-338-6094; www.dallashotwieners.com
