Staying home doesn’t have to mean stuck at home. CraftZee, an online company based out of West Haverstraw, sells do-it-yourself kits for making home and bath products — a fun way for families to bond while self-isolating.
The idea was conceived when owner Faigy Baumhaft, a mom of three, was looking for a way to connect with her family while expressing her creative side. She began making candles with her husband and eventually shared finished products as gifts. They were a hit with friends and family, so she decided to try selling candle-making kits online a little over a year ago. Without any marketing, sales took off and CraftZee was born running.
Three DIY kits are currently available: the Premium DIY Soap Making Kit, Complete DIY Candle Making Kit, and the Ultimate DIY Bath Bomb Making Kit. “Arts and crafts encourage learning at home, allowing you to bond and have fun with your family while creating,” says Baumhaft. “Best of all, you end up with a keepsake to remind you of the great time you had.” The essential oils in the candles also help create a tranquil atmosphere at home. And who couldn’t use that right now?
The kits were designed for adults — or families with adult supervision, as melted wax and soap can be dangerously hot — and come with easy-to-follow instructions, as well as every tool you’ll need, including a melting pot for blending the soy wax flakes and wax color cubes. Essential-oil fragrance options including lavender, clean cotton, coconut lime, and cinnamon-vanilla.
CraftZee’s kits use high-quality, lab-certified products. The bath bomb kit, for instance, includes all-natural ingredients and elegant touches like dried rose petals; and the soap-making kit comes with decorative gift boxes to make sharing your finished work even easier.
“People dismiss ‘hobbies’ as an old-fashioned word, but these are the things that make us human and creative,” says Baumhaft. “When family members learn a hobby together, they share what they love with people they love.”
