Check Out “Pay-What-You-Can” Day at This Kingston Café

Share

The idea of a combination vegetarian café-slash-antique shop is probably novel enough for most, but owners Gabriel Constantine and Tarah Gay of {outdated: an antique café} have begun doing something a bit more unique, even by their standards. On the first Thursday of every month, diners can choose to pay however much they want for anything on the menu. Seriously. You can pay more, pay less, even pay nothing for a nutritious, locally-sourced meal.

“We just started it as a nice amenity, a way to get together with the whole community,” Gay says. “We had talked about having a special menu for today but that didn’t feel very generous in some way.”

The full menu includes breakfast standbys such as egg or vegan sandwiches, waffles, scrambles, fresh fruit, and baked goods, as well as lunch options like tacos, salads, grilled and cold sandwiches, quinoa or bean bowls, and even a pickled veggies plate. Fair trade cold brew coffee, tea, cold pressed juice, and smoothies and milkshakes (non-dairy always available) round out the potables.

“A couple of our regulars have actually been very generous, and a bunch of yoga studios have volunteered to work to offset the costs.”

Those costs are also mitigated by the fact that practically everything in the shop not bolted down is also for sale. Having had their first date at a flea market, Constantine and Gay have spent years acquiring all kinds of vintage bric-a-brac from estate sales and antique shows. Not only does it lend a charming air the café, it draws in an entirely separate clientele who inevitably stays for the aroma of delicious scones.

Stop by today, September 7, for Outdated’s monthly pay-what-you-can day, and offer up as much as you want for whatever you want.
