With so many historic estates and resorts in the Hudson Valley, it’s no wonder that the region stood out above the rest in Travel + Leisure’s 2024 World’s Best Awards. Most notably, Orange County’s Cedar Lakes Estate came out on top, ranking first in top hotels in New York State and 60th in the top 100 best hotels in the world. The estate, which is an iconic wedding venue and resort, ranks among two other Hudson Valley hotels – Wildflower Farms in Gardiner and Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz – as a top hotel in the state.
Originally constructed in the 1930s as a summer camp, Cedar Lakes Estate remains at the heart of the Hudson Valley decades later. The retreat operates as a picturesque wedding venue from spring through fall, transforming into a winter wonderland in the colder months. The property’s 500 acres feature 16 luxury cottages, 14 cabins, and six cozy suites that blend nostalgia with the comforts of modern amenities.
The story behind Cedar Lakes Estate is just as charming as the resort’s accommodations. Co-owners and sisters Lisa and Stephanie Karvellas have been familiar with the grounds since they were young, enjoying white Christmases and lakeside summer days at the property. Later in life, the pair found their way back to Cedar Lakes, where they took over operations and reimagined the space, thoughtfully curating a range of onsite offerings, inviting accommodations, and exquisite event spaces along the way.
“We are incredibly honored to be named the top hotel in New York State by Travel + Leisure,” share Stephanie and Lisa. “This recognition is a testament to our team’s hard work, passion, and commitment to excellence. We are grateful to our guests for their unwavering support and to Travel + Leisure for this incredible acknowledgment.”
As a Travel + Leisure World’s Best Award-winner, Cedar Lakes Estate has exemplified a commitment to providing its guests with unparalleled luxury, exceptional service, and unique experiences. Guests to the estate can anticipate relaxation lakeside, nostalgic “drive-in” movies, and the estate’s summer Supper Series, a communal dining event in an open-air pavilion that highlights produce from the chef’s garden and neighboring Hudson Valley farms.
Cedar Lakes Estate is located at 1 Team USA Way in Port Jervis.
