Boxes of chocolate, bouquets of flowers, fancy jewelry — these are the traditional gifts for Valentine’s Day. Looking for something a little different? Consider the unique “Carve Your (He)ART” event taking place at the P. Ross: Where Art Meets Fashion Boutique in Nyack.
Throughout the month of February, the boutique — which features shoes, clothing, and accessories for both men and women — hosts an interactive art show by Nyack painter Kerri Lee Green. (Her name might ring a bell: She is also an actress who appeared in the 1985 film The Goonies as well as in a long list of TV series.) Green usually fashions works based on 18th-century Mexican religious art, which she executes on pieces of reclaimed wood. For this exhibit, she also includes paintings of stylized hearts, into which purchasers can carve their initials or a message, thereby creating a personalized piece of art as a Valentine gift. “It’s like carving your initials into a tree,” says shop owner Paulette Ross. “Green uses many layers and colors of paint with a wax coating. When you carve into the wood, all those colors come out, and it looks fantastic.” The paintings sell for $100-$125 each.
Ross — the organizer of Nyack’s annual Art Walk event in June — has hosted two other art shows at the boutique, and says the reaction has been “very positive. My customers — and potential customers — are very pleased to see another gallery of sorts in Nyack. It is an art-type community.”
The show runs from Feb. 1-28. Boutique hours are Tues.-Sat. 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Sun. 12-6 p.m. Opening cocktail reception Feb. 1, 6:30-8:30 p.m. 89 Main St., Nyack; 845-348-1767.
