A man who had hijacked a car in Beacon’s Memorial Park yesterday afternoon was shot and killed by police after a dramatic foot chase near Exit 11 on Interstate 84, effectively closing the roadway and halting rush hour traffic on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge.
At approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Beacon police officers responded to a carjacking at Memorial Park. They pursued the suspect on foot after he abandoned the vehicle and led them through a wooded area along the interstate.
The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was shot and killed near Exit 11 in Wappingers Falls after he threatened police with a large knife.
The area, which was closed off for nearly six hours during the subsequent investigation by authorities in the area, experienced heavy delays in traffic as a result. With the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge closed, travelers were rerouted to the Bear Mountain and Mid-Hudson crossings.
