Bennett Miller And Dan Futterman, Two Mamaroneck Alumni, Received Oscar Nominations For Foxcatcher

For the second time, the two locals have collaborated for a widely acclaimed movie.

If you’ve partaken in the Internet today, you probably saw that the Oscar nomination list was released this morning. No crazy surprises: Boyhood, Birdman, American Sniper, Grand Budapest Hotel, Selma — they’re all there.

But if you scroll down to the Best Director and Best Original Screenplay sections, you’ll see Foxcatcher, and next to that, you’ll see director Bennett Miller and screenwriter Dan Futterman. And those are two Mamaroneck High School alumni. And that’s pretty awesome.

The two collaborated on the star-studded story about Olympic wrestlers Mark and Dave Schultz and, with the help of outstanding performances, received rave reviews from the New York Times (and a few of our editors). The film garnered five Oscar nominations overall; in addition to Miller’s and Futterman’s (which he’d share with writing partner E. Max Frye), Steve Carell was nominated for Best Actor, the Valley’s own anti-fracking activisit Mark Ruffalo for Best Supporting Actor, and Bill Corso/Dennis Liddiard for Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling.

This is the second nomination for each in their respective categories. The first? Their 2005 collaboration Capote. Miller’s increasingly impressive oeuvre also boasts Moneyball.
