Patterns, please! Rosemary, Christina, and Lauren show off chic prints and a variety of hemlines
|
At the office we love to dress up: high heels, flirty skirts, and jewelry — just to keep our fellow fashionistas on our toes, you know? Today, it looks like we all got the memo about the patterns trend that’s so hot right now.
WHEN: Tuesday, August 5, 2014
WHO’S WEARING IT: Assistant Editor Rosemary O. Fernandez (top left) and editorial interns Christina Wonsbeck (middle) and Lauren Berg (top right)
WHAT WE WORE: Rosemary shows off her cute baby bump (a boy!) with a striped black-and-white maxi from Oh Baby by Motherhood. She tops it off with Nine West sandals and layered Alex & Anni charm bracelets, and effortlessly reigns in her fiery tresses with a topknot bun.
I’m sporting a vintage shift dress in a geometric pattern, a thick black W. Kleinberg belt, my newest nude pumps from Nine West, and my favorite black leather jacket from Zara — for a little edge, of course.
Sheer is all the rage these days, but Lauren expertly makes it office-appropriate by pairing her Forever 21 tulip skirt with a long sleeveless top in a subtle pattern from Banana Republic. She completes her look with a statement necklace by Zed and killer white Anne Klein heels.

WHEN: Mon., Sept. 20, 2010
WHO’S WEARING IT: Assistant Editor Melissa Esposito
WHAT SHE WORE: Melissa is the apple of our eye (ha!) in skinny jeans, a printed peasant top, fitted motorcycle jacket, and comfy triple-buckle flats. An oversized citrine-yellow bag adds a pop of color, and layered necklaces and rings complement the metallic accents in her jacket and shoes.
WHY WE DIG IT: Skinnies are a fall staple, and dressing them up with a pretty top and fitted jacket makes for a put-together look for the office. Melissa’s our edgiest editor, so the buckles and metallic embellishments show off a bit of her personality — without seeming gaudy. Keep rockin’ it, Mel!

WHEN: Thurs., Sept. 23, 2010
WHO’S WEARING IT: Administrative Assistant Doli Morcos (left) and Assistant Editor Melissa Esposito
WHAT THEY WORE: We caught Doli and Melissa walking into the office looking oh-so-chic! To prep for day-long meetings — and yet stay comfy — Doli wears a black, button-down ruffled tank and matching pants for a classic, streamlined silhouette. Silver jewelry and strappy heels add some flare (note her cognac Prada tote — it’s for sale for $50!).
Melissa pairs a graphic tee with black capris and a purple cardigan. She finishes the look with a cinched snakeskin belt, her signature peep-toe ankle-strap heels, and a “lock” necklace. Perfect for a warm, breezy day!

WHEN: Fri., Sept. 24, 2010
WHO’S WEARING IT: Senior Editor Polly Sparling
WHAT SHE WORE: While Polly reviews the latest issue of HV Mag, we love how she dresses up a comfy white tee with this ultra-modern patterned skirt. A classic red belt pulls it all together, while abstract-shaped earrings and cut-out Oxford heels play up the geometric theme. Well done!
WHY WE DIG IT: Geometric patterns have always been a big hit, and Polly works it flawlessly. Plus, we adore these shoes — they’re sophisticated enough for the office, and we think the cut-outs are super flirty. The best part? She’s ready for a night out on the town… without having to change a thing!

WHEN: Fri., Sept. 24, 2010
WHO’S WEARING IT:Creative Director Bob Supina
WHAT HE WORE: Bob insists this isn’t his best outfit, but we can’t help but admire his duotone mastery. A rich, blue checkered shirt and navy jean flatter his skin tone, while black leather accessories (belt, shoes) contrast just enough to give his getup some kick. Don’t forget the knit skinny tie — a must-have in Bob’s wardrobe!
WHY WE DIG IT: Though it’s casual Friday, Bob knows exactly how to make a pair of jeans look chic.

You don’t need to trek to a high-end shop to be stylish. Bob agrees: “Thrift shops are cool!” Make like our guy and browse your local thrift shop or consignment store for vintage pieces with personality. We like that this tie’s maker — Julius’ Men’s Shop in Sacramento — actually embroidered its logo. It’s all about the details!

WHEN: Fri., Oct. 22, 2010
WHO’S WEARING IT: Assistant Editor Melissa Esposito and Web Editor/Assistant Editor Jessica Friedlander
WHAT THEY WORE: Our girls showed up to the office this morning in virtually the same ensemble*: dark blue skinny jeans, red knit tops, and black flats. Melissa layered a navy tank under her red cardigan, and Jess accessorized with a black flower necklace.
*The editors would like to note that this was NOT planned… but knowing how these two lead nearly identical lives otherwise, we suppose it was inevitable anyhow.

WHEN: Fri., Dec. 10, 2010
WHO’S WEARING IT: Assistant/Web Editor Jessica Friedlander and Art Intern April Baton
WHAT THEY WORE: The gals are on the same page in dark blue jeans and cream-colored sweaters. Jess wears a gold/pearl chain necklace and nude heels, and her new knit scarf is the perfect complement to April’s rockin’ pink and purple argyle V-neck. (Note: a hint of lime green on the design makes the print pop.) Casual Friday just got a whole lot classier!

WHEN: Thurs., Mar. 9, 2011
WHO’S WEARING IT: Assistant Editor Melissa Esposito
WHAT SHE WORE: Mel recently picked up this great spring dress at Express — she calls it her “prairie dress!” To make it more office-appropriate, she tops it with a suede jacket, matching heels and knee socks, and a brassy necklace. Notice the bold pink nail polish, which adds just enough color without distracting from the Bohemian vibe.

WHEN: Weds., May 25, 2011
WHO’S WEARING IT: Web Editor Jessica Friedlander, Creative Director Bob Supina, and Administrative Assistant Doli Morcos
WHAT THEY WORE: The nautical trend seems to crop up every spring, and we thought this trio nailed it — and the many ways to wear it! Jess matches a striped tee with a black boyfriend blazer, navy skinny jeans, nude pumps, brown leather belt, and gold/brown stone necklace. Bob takes a fashion risk (that pays off) and matches a crisp, all-white getup (before Memorial Day, we know!) with black leather shoes and belt. Doli, our resident fashionista, pairs a flirty striped tank with a streamlined pencil skirt, peep-toe espadrilles, and silver jewelry. Ahoy, this fashion ship has landed!

WHO’S WEARING IT: Contributing Designer Arlene So, Creative Director Bob Supina, Contributing Editor Sara Greenberg, Web Editor Jessica Friedlander
WHAT WE WORE: Looks like someone got the memo! Whether we’re feeling dark over Punxsutawney Phil’s winter forecast, or we simply dig the classic black-and-gray combo, one thing’s for sure — we’re stylin’!
Arlene takes layers to new heights with black leggings, a chunky knit tunic, comfy hat, and edgy metallic buckled boots.
Bob pairs a black button-down with gray slacks, a favorite skinny tie, slick shoes (look at that shine!), and a fun pocket accessory (see next photo).
Sara tops a classic Calvin Klein gray shift dress with a black cardigan and heels; a vintage pearl necklace brightens her look.
Jess keeps it simple in a black turtleneck, tights, plaid skirt, and funky cuff.

WHAT WE WORE: Our fashionable foursome celebrates the start of springtime with some serious (but not *too* serious) style! Julie’s deep purple top really pops against crisp white pants and silver jewelry; Ro complements her famous copper locks against a form-flattering royal-blue and black dress (check out our fashion spread in May for more on colorblocking); Shanna pops her fiercest pose in a dusty pink blouse, slim pant, and platform pumps; and Rebecca continues to wow us with her classic style in a soft-blue button-down, V-neck dress, charming pendant, and adorable bow-adorned nude heels. WHO’S WEARING IT: Web intern Tori Huntsinger, Marketing Director Shanna Gruner, and Advertising Sales Assistant Rebecca Coppola
WHAT THEY WORE: It’s a pre-fall preview! Lace made quite the impact on the runway this year, and Tori proves that black-on-black can be elegant (and not at all goth). Shanna gets extra points for rocking a peplum top — one of this season’s biggest (and best) trends — in tangerine, Pantone’s official Color of the Year. Rebecca takes a classic LBD to new heights with a bright statement necklace. Love that red!

WHEN: Tues., September 11, 2012
WHO’S WEARING IT: Web Intern Tori Huntsinger and Editorial Intern Brenna McKinley
WHAT THEY WORE: Patterns and color blocking are two of the hottest trends right now, and it’s safe to say our interns got the memo. (Oh heck, they pretty much wrote the memo.) Tori takes black and white to a whole new level with a pretty striped dress, black cardigan (with a navy hue!), matching opaque tights, and studded flats. A lot of stylistas are tempted to over-do it on the accessories, but her wide belt, silver bracelet, and barrette are simple-yet-flirty touches that add just the right amount of sparkle.
Remember our summer fashion spread (http://www.hvmag.com/summerfashion2012), when we suggested using your hair color to complement your color blocked wardrobe? THIS is exactly what we mean: Brenna’s lovely copper locks are really offset by her royal blue top — these hues are intense enough, so she doesn’t need many other elements distracting from such a rockin’ color combo! She anchors the brights with neutrals in the form of a black skirt and nude flats that complement her fair skin tone. Classic pearl earrings and a circlet add a sort of subdued elegance that our lone daffodil (shyly peeking in from the background) could only wish to master. Nice work, ladies!

WHEN: Tues., September 11, 2012
WHO’S WEARING IT: Advertising Sales Assistant Rebecca Coppola and Creative Director Bob Supina
WHAT THEY WORE: Rebecca is exceptionally fashionable every day (seriously, our girl belongs on the runway), but today she’s a vision in gold. We love how she channels her inner 1940s vixen in a flaxen-hued lace top, matching pearls, and pencil skirt. The Most Adorable Peep-Toe Heels That Have Ever Existed (check us on that, but we’re pretty sure that’s the brand name) and bright red lips knock this perfect early-fall look outta the park.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the tree, Bobonair® Supina rocks one of his signature patterned skinny ties, featuring our favorite fall color combination: chocolate, cream, and cinnamon. A slightly warm, off-white collar shirt and brown-black trousers tie right in with this theme, and accessories — a silver watch and rich brown leather belt and shoes — add a little shine (and pizzazz).

WHEN: Wed., September 12, 2012
WHO’S WEARING IT: Office Manager Doli Morcos, Marketing Director Shanna Gruner, and Assistant Editor Rosemary O’Connor
WHAT THEY WORE: Stop, in the name of style! Summer’s not through with us just yet, and our lovely ladies certainly know how to celebrate a warm, mid-September day.
Doli puts her own twist on the color blocking trend: ruching! She accessorizes with a layered necklace, bracelet, and peep-toe heels. Her bright nail polish is a great way to add color without going over the top.
If you’re looking to spruce up your usual collared-shirt-and-skirt office uniform, why not try a print? The floral design on Shanna’s blouse livens things up, while the ruching on her blush-hued skirt adds texture. Nude “Kate Middleton” heels (as Rosemary calls ’em) highlight Shanna’s golden glow.
Rosemary’s cap-toed flats — a huge trend at the moment — complement her striped dress without being too matchy. Her bold fitted blazer, which contrasts nicely with her fiery hair, makes this outfit totally office-ready. Later, RoRo can simply remove it for a more casual look when she’s out with friends!

WHEN: Thurs., September 20, 2012
WHO’S WEARING IT: Assistant Editor Rosemary O’Connor
WHAT SHE WORE: We know RoRo was born with an innate sense of style, but there’s no denying her travels to Britain were a wee bit influential. Remember The Girl In The Check Scarf’s blog post today about peplum? Rosemary rocks a peplum jacket over a flouncy blouse and gray pencil skirt. But what elevates this look into the style stratosphere are the accessories: hair in a topknot? Check. London-charm necklace and bracelet? Check and check. Houndstooth heels with bold red stripes? Super-check. And we can’t forget the mug! This getup is certainly our cup of tea.

WHO’S WEARING IT: Art intern Aimee Beltramini
WHAT SHE WORE: We’re really digging this autumn-appropriate print sweater Aimee’s rocking right now. Chartreuse — a mix between yellow and green — is a super hot hue, but it can overwhelm an outfit if you let it. Aimee’s floral print tones it down just enough; layering it with a black top and olive maxi skirt pulls it all together!

WHAT SHE WORE: We spotted this fab print on Aimee and refused to let her leave the office until we documented it! By itself, this skirt is perfect for a lazy summer day — but with a neutral top, leggings, and heels, it’s now our favorite fall getup! Aimee’s fitted blazer makes the look office-appropriate, while her bucket bag (from Paris!) perfectly complements the skirt’s Bohemian vibe.

We told our lovely Marketing Director Shanna Gruner that we wanted to snap a photo for What We Wore… but we lied. (Sorry Shanna, but we’re totally going to embarrass you right now.)
Not even 24 hours ago, on her way to a meeting in Middletown yesterday afternoon, our girl here watched a tractor trailer flip right in front of her car. She pulled onto the shoulder in the nick of time, but two other cars slammed into the truck. Thankfully, there were only minor injuries (thanks in part to Shanna, who — in a dress and heels — climbed the overturned truck to help the driver escape)! AND Shanna made her meeting on time.
Read the Times Herald-Record story here (http://bit.ly/151HwyJ), and congrats to Mrs. Gruner for being our Hudson Valley Hero of the Day.

WHO’S WEARING IT: Spring 2014 Editorial Intern Madeline Anthony
WHAT SHE WORE: The SUNY New Paltz senior paired a flowy, floral-patterned peasant top with an on-trend high-low skirt in a complementary hue. Maddie’s peep-toe flats and painted nails also add pops of color to perfectly match the red in her blouse.
We’ve always loved blue and brown together; when highlighted with red, we’d say this is a fantastic color combo for spring!

-
WHEN: Tuesday, May 6, 2014
WHO’S WEARING IT: Sales Support Manager Rebecca Coppola
WHAT SHE WORE: Rebecca’s outfits always catch our eye: with her creamy complexion and dark hair, she routinely pulls off jewel-toned dresses and tops, much to the envy of our editors. And now, she can add neutrals to her repertoire.
“I didn’t know how to wear this jacket at first,” she admits of her structured, coffee-hued blazer. But we think using neutrals as an accent color is a perfect solution. Set against black in the form of her favorite printed blouse (with teeny white polka dots and a touch of ruching!) and fitted leggings, this jacket just pops.
Of course, on-trend metallic accents — such as a gorgeous gold leaf brooch, gold earrings, and matching sandals — brings out the warmth of the jacket and adds a little sparkle to her look. Complete with a dab of ruby red lipstick, our girl is ready to hit the town after work!

WHEN: Monday, January 25, 2016
WHO’S WEARING IT: Sales Support Manager Christine Riebe
WHAT SHE WORE: Christine layers a trio of classic neutrals — beige, brown, and black — in a way that’s proportionate and not overwhelming, starting off with a simple black top and khaki pants. For extra warmth, she uses a chunky, ribbed sweater vest (FYI, these things are all the rage right now); the sleeveless option means it’s just as cozy, but not constrictive. A printed scarf ties together her top and pants, while heeled boots — in brown and black — incorporate the vest and top. If fashion had a yin and yang, this outfit would be it!
(Bonus points for rocking a color scheme that matched her hair’s lovely, chocolate hue!)
