Local dentists offer underprivileged children free checkups

On February 6, dentists across the Valley are participating in Give Kids A Smile, an American Dental Association-sponsored event in which children who lack insurance or belong to low-income families can receive exams, cleanings, and emergency treatment, free of charge. Besides allowing for important in-office work, Give Kids A Smile gives dentists the opportunity to reinforce the daily brushing practices that will leave kids’ teeth clean and healthy year-round, says Dr. Edward Prus of Hopewell Junction’s Center for Dental Excellence. “We want children to know how easy it is,” Prus says. In a nation in which 50 percent of first-graders suffer from tooth decay — and one-third of them go without treatment — that’s news that should leave kids (and their parents) grinning from ear to ear.
