A Nyack Eatery Ranked in Esquire’s Best New Restaurants List

The family-owned Filipino spot in Rockland brings world flavor to the Hudson Valley.

It’s about to get a whole lot harder to score a table at Karenderya.

In its ranking of “Best New Restaurants in America” for 2018, Esquire ranked the Nyack eatery as one of the top 19 restaurants in America. Alongside foodie hotspots in places like San Francisco, New York City, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, the publication honored the Rockland eatery for its commitment to authentic Filipino cuisine.

“In the future, we pray, thousands of small towns in America will have Filipino restaurants as excellent as this one, with adobo pork belly braised to crispy meltiness atop garlic rice, and shrimp aswim in a coconut broth that tastes like French cream, and a cassava-jackfruit cake that comes across like a cobbler in which the topping and the filling have magically merged, and a smart beer list that highlights the best of Hudson Valley breweries,” writes Jeff Gordinier, Esquire’s food and drinks editor (and local Westchesterite).

Wow, we’ve been completely overwhelmed by the amazing outpouring of support we’ve received on the heels of the recent honor bestowed upon us by @thegordinier @esquire ! Believe it or not (we can’t believe it!), we have SOLD OUT of many of our menu items already today. The restaurant will be closed tonight to ensure that we are ready to serve you all this weekend. We apologize for any inconvenience, but rest assured that we are working really hard to be ready for you all this weekend. We remain grateful for everyone’s support! #filipinofood #filipinofoodmovement #nyack #westchestereats #rocklandeats #visitnyack #hudsonvalley #esquire #bestnewrestaurants #restauranthunter

And how could they? After all, it’s not like umami pairings of fried mini eggrolls with spicy banana ketchup and pork ribs in sour tamarind broth pop up in many a Hudson Valley restaurant. That’s probably why visitors keep coming back for more of whatever co-owners Cheryl Baun and Paulo Garcia Mendoza concoct.

So pull up a colorful, mismatched chair, grab a Hudson Valley beer, and get ready to try something new, unusual, and 100-percent wonderful.
