A Nonprofit with Teeth

A Woodstock dental practice starts a foundation to help underprivileged kids

A recent study released by the Pew Center on the States estimated that one in five children in the U.S. don’t receive proper dental care.

Dr. Michael Tischler, of Tischler Dental in Woodstock, wants to change that. In February, he announced the creation of the Tischler Dental Foundation, which will raise funds so that underprivileged children can receive the dental care that they need. “In Ulster County, there are children in need of dental services living with tooth pain and decay,” says Tischler. “As a dentist, this is unacceptable.”

One of the main beneficiaries of the funds raised by the foundation will be PRASAD Children’s Dental Health Program. Based in Sullivan County, this agency runs a mobile dental clinic which travels to rural areas to offer dental health education and treatment. The foundation will also support other nonprofit community organizations in the Ulster County area.

Tischler Dental was founded by Maurice Tischler, Michael’s father, in 1971. They started the foundation as a way to really make a difference. “After living in this area for many years, my family and I wanted to give back to this community,” Tischler says.

The foundation’s first fund-raising event takes place on the grounds of Tischler Dental on July 24. Festivities will include live music from local favorites the Hot Rod band and jazz vocalist Betty MacDonald, and an auction of items donated by local artists (as well as many of Tischler Dental’s own patients). Tickets to the day’s events are $35. For more information, call foundation organizer Judy Hinchey, at 845-679-3706 or visit www.tischlerdental.com.
