7 Super Bowl Sunday Beer Pairings

You’ll need beer – and lots of it – for Super Bowl Sunday.

No matter if you’re into the game or just watching for the commercials, Super Bowl Sunday isn’t complete without food and (a whole lot) of beer. To make sure you’re buying the right brews (skip the Bud Light, won’t you?) for your game day spread, Brendan Carroll of Bronxville’s Beer Noggin’s recommends seven styles to pair with our favorite Super Bowl foods.

Buffalo Wings

Pair with: Milk Stout

“Savory, spicy wings sauce works extremely well with the roasted chocolate malts of a milk stout. All that peppery heat begs for something silky to dampen the flames dancing on your tongue.”

Try: Bell’s Double Cream (Comstock, MI; ABV: 6.1%)

“Something lighter in body like Bell’s Double cream won’t fill you up so you can take down a dozen wings without getting full.”

Pair with: Saison

“We’ve done some extensive drinking while dipping our tortilla chips in nice chunky guac. Of all the pairings we’ve tried, saisons are our favorite for their citrusy flavors and bright carbonation. The acidity from the lime and tomatoes is perked up by the citrus flavors and aromas, and bright carbonation cuts through the rich, creaminess of the dish. “

Try: Allagash Hoppy Table Beer (Portland, ME; ABV: 4.8%)

“Allagash Hoppy Table Beer has all the characteristics of a saison with the addition of coriander and a more aggressive hopping for aromatics and flavor.”

Cheese Pizza

Pair with: Pilsner

“There are some pairings so perfect they should not be messed with. It’s simple: You take a bite of pizza and wash it down with crisp, refreshing lager. We’ve tried drinking countless other styles with pizza, but it never felt right.”

Try: Firestone Pivo Pils (Paso Robles, CA; ABV: 5.3%)

“Firestone Pivo Pils is an exceptional example of the Pilsner style. This award-winning lager should always be stocked in your fridge – it’s clean, balanced, briskly hoped, and supremely drinkable.”

Beef Chili

Pair with: Imperial Stout

“Beef chili is super hearty so you’re going to need a beer that can stand up to it. An Imperial stout is robust, chocolately, and full of body.”

Try: Prairie BOMB! (Tulsa, OK; ABV: 13%)

“Prairie BOMB! is our pick for the ultimate chili beer. It’s an Imperial stout aged on coffee, cacao nibs, vanilla beans, and chili peppers – ingredients you would already put into a serious chili.”

Pigs in a Blanket

Pair with: Helles Lager

“Miniature hot dogs wrapped in dough and dipped in mustard are so smart and so delicious. They work well with lighter German-style beers like Helles, which pull out the sweetness of the meat. The clean, crisp nature cuts through the greasy meat and spicy mustard.”

Try: Von Trapp Helles (Stowe, VT; ABV: 4.9%)

“Von Trapp Helles is an affordable example of an extremely well-crafted lager.”

Pair with: IPA

“Nachos are awesome because you can get so many flavors popping off in one bite. With all these super flavorful ingredients we like something a little more assertive like an IPA. Bright citrus flavors go well with Mexican-inspired dishes, and the strong bitterness contrasts the richness of the nachos. IPAs also respond extremely well to spice. So, when you’re headed toward your tenth handful of nachos, you’re showing no signs of slowing down.”

Try: Singlecut Does Anybody Remember Laughter? (Astoria, Queens; ABV: 7.2%)

“Singlecut Does Anybody Remember Laughter? is packed with the perfect amount of juicy, piney hops to stand up to that mountain of flavor.”

Six-Foot Sub

Pair with: Amber Ale

“A balanced, easy-drinking beer like amber ale is a safe choice for a big old sub sammy. The beer’s slightly sweet and bready malts echo the roasted flavors of the bread and meat. The subtle hopping washes down creamy condiments like mayo and Thousand Island dressing.”

Try: Jack’s Abby Red Tape (Framingham, MA; ABV: 5%)

“Jack’s Abby Red Tape is a stellar example. It comes in 16oz tall boy cans, so you can snag several sections of your couch-sized sub and not have to reload.”
