Black Lit: The African-American Narrative

North Reading Room, James A. Cannavino Library, Marist College, Poughkeepsie
February 8-March 31

Celebrate the start of Black History Month in the Hudson Valley by checking out Marist College’s thematic rare book display. Throughout February and March, the college’s Cannavino Library showcases the rare collection of biographies, poetry, and critical essays of prominent black authors. The opening reception is on February 13 at 4 p.m., with public viewings available during regular library hours during the week.

Times Union Home Expo

Albany Capital Center, Albany

If you’re in or around the Capital Region this weekend, take a day to check out the home show at the Albany Capital Center. Winter Winederland

Missing the food and drink wonderland that is the Hudson Valley in summer? Fear not! Over the weekend, Altamont Vineyard and Winery embraces comfort food eats and sips during its “Winederland” event. A top chef competition takes place on Saturday, while a dessert bar sweetens the weekend. Families will love the chance to snap photos in the igloo photo booth and pose next to the intricate ice sculptures. Live music, wine pulls, and snowshoeing tours will also take place during the two days.

Winter Maker’s Market

Greenville Arms 1889 Inn, Greenville
February 9-10, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This weekend, the Winter Maker’s Market returns to the Greenville Arms 1889 Inn for its second year. With a medley of vendors set up inside the Carriage House Art Studio and Main Inn, the fest is just the thing for cozy shopping (and pre-Valentine’s Day gifting). While you’re there, don’t forget to swing by the Vanderbilt Room Café for coffee and small bites.

 

 

Ghost Stories

Ulster Performing Arts Center, Kingston
February 9, 5 p.m.

Get ready for chills, thrills, and a whole lot of laughter when Ghost Stories returns to UPAC. The third rendition of the event, hosted by actors Hilarie Burton and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, benefits Astor Services for Children & Families in Rhinebeck. A limited number of tickets, which begin at $41, are still available via Ticketmaster. If you’re interested, here’s where to look for them! P.S. We hear there will be quite a few surprise guests throughout the course of the storytelling as well.

 

Disco Ball

Historic Green Room, Newburgh
February 9, 8-11 p.m.

Break out the leg warmers for Safe Harbors of the Hudson’s festive Disco Ball on Saturday night. Held in the Historic Green Room next to Ann Street Gallery, the dance brings disco jams and boogie moves to town. Bag of Trix provides the music, while Jeff Selby, the creator and founder of New Style Hustle, offers dance lessons. Dessert and drinks will be available when it comes time to take a break from the dance floor.
