5 Father's Day Food and Activity Pairings

Celebrate the occasion with five eat and play combos that will bring a smile to his face.

It feels like June was made for Father’s Day. After all, it’s that sweet spot in the year when the golf courses are green, sports are in swing, and the grills are ready to go. In honor of the holiday, treat dad, pops, padre, or whatever else you call him to a fun-filled day in the Hudson Valley.

Golf and Gourmet Lunch

Dad will be over the moon at Wiltwyck Golf Club in Kingston. The semi-private space boasts a championship course and driving range for him to practice his swing and a pool and tennis courts for him to switch up his routine.

Between traversing the greens and swimming laps at the pool, dad will work up a major appetite at Wiltwyck. Luckily, the locale has an onsite eatery to ease the hunger pangs. At the Capital Tavern, diners can enjoy innovative Americana fare, like the PB&B, a clever riff on the classic sandwich that involves pork belly, and the fried chicken sandwich on plush brioche bread. To drink, keep it local with a Mill House Kold One or a Sloop Juice Bomb.

Biking and Brews

If dad loves to bike to work or hit the trails on the weekend, he will jump on the chance to tour the Hudson Valley with Rail Explorers. Located in Phoenicia, the Catskills attraction invites visitors to pedal along the historic Ulster and Delaware Railroad on special two and four-person bike carts. Traverse the route as you catch up on life and take in the picturesque views.

Once you work up a thirst, head over to nearby Woodstock Brewing to slurp up some of the finest beers in upstate NY. Try the new Negative Gamma IPA, with notes of grapefruit and lemon, or savor the Naga-L Lager, with wildflower honey undercurrents. A number of beers are taproom-only releases, so be sure to sample one of the exclusive varieties while you’re there.

Hiking and BBQ-ing

For all the dads who live and breathe the great outdoors, Mohonk Mountain House has Father’s Day in the bag. Start the morning off right with a hike along one of the preserve’s scenic trails. If dad is the adventurous sort, challenge him to a scramble up the Lemon Squeeze, the aptly named climb that is as steep as it is narrow. We promise the view from the top is worth it.

If you start planning now, you can make a reservation for Mohonk’s Father’s Day Granary Cookout. Held on June 17, the cookout menu includes summer grilling staples like barbecued chicken and spare ribs, hamburgers, corn on the cob, and macaroni and cheese. For dessert, sample slices of practically every fruit pie imaginable. Top dad’s plate off with a scoop of ice cream or frozen yogurt to end his day on a sweet note.

Planes and Picnics

This Father’s Day, treat dad to a high-flyer show at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. During the holiday weekend, the World War One airshow will showcase period planes and vintage fire engines for visitors to see up close. The museum and grounds will also be open during that time. As a bonus, admission is free for First Responders as part of First Responders Weekend.

For lunch, take a short drive to the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park for The Great American Father’s Day Cookout. Hosted by the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt Historical Association, the cookout is ideal for families who want to celebrate the day together. Bring your own blankets and chairs to camp out under the sun, and then chow down on grill essentials like hamburgers, hot dogs, and potato salad.
