10 Tips for Staying Active in the Cold

Don’t let the winter blues keep you down.

1. Safety first: Don’t go out in frigid weather without conditioning the body first, and don’t overdress, either.

2. Use meditation and deep breathing exercises before heading outdoors, to oxygenate the tissues and improve endurance and tolerance to the cold.

3. Practice deep breathing while you’re outside exercising as well: This helps the body retain oxygen, and helps with circulation.

4. Start acclimating yourself to cold showers, to condition the body against outdoor cold climates.

5. In the cold, make sure your hands, feet, and head are covered. The body will draw heat from those areas to keep the core and internal organs warm.

6. Listen to the body. If something does not feel right, slow down, and rest.

7. Drink lots of water. Besides avoiding dehydration, drinking cold water makes your body work to warm up the cold water to core temperature.

8. Do some light movement training to warm the body before heading out into the cold.

9. Eat if you are hungry before heading out. A little fat or protein is good, but keep food and drink consumption to a minimum. Eat bigger when you are done.

10. One more note on safety: Try to have a training partner if outdoors in the cold. The extreme cold can be very deceiving. When you think you are fine, things can begin to happen very rapidly – dehydration, dizziness, etc.
