The Perfect Mix

“This 1980s house was in desperate need of an update,” says architect Daniel Contelmo. “We wanted to create a space that would remain timeless, yet useful for many years.”

The 280 sq ft (460 sq ft with breakfast area) space was existing and the footprint didn’t change, but the peninsula was removed and the new design started with the center island, working around the ceiling beams. “My favorite element is the balance of the range wall with pantry doors and transoms on either side,” says Contelmo.

The custom cabinets were made by JEM Woodworking and feature upper cabinets with 2/3 glass. “This allows more visibility and design to the upper section while providing a solid panel at the bottom to hide the everyday dishes,” says Contelmo.

The color palette was kept neutral. The cabinets and woodwork are painted with Benjamin Moore’s White Dove, while the walls are painted with Benjamin Moore’s Richmond Gray HC-96. The final product is a mix of traditional and rustic elements that is timeless and sure to give the homeowners many years of happy entertaining and cooking.

What to Do: “The dry pantry is the easiest way to keep the kitchen tidy,” says Contelmo. “It houses all of the overflow of appliances and food, and has a counter for sorting groceries.”

What Not to Do: Don’t divide up the design tasks. “With renovations where the kitchen is just one component, it is prudent to have the architect design the kitchen,” says Contelmo. “This ensures continuity of a design throughout the house.”
