Solved!

Interior designer Claudia Jacobs shows how you can give a room new life without buying a thing.

Problem: Clients had built a spacious addition to their home, but although it was beautiful they didn’t use it. Even when they had company, nobody was drawn into the room. The couple needed advice on how to make the space inviting.

Solution: The main problem was that the pool table dominated the part of the great room that was visible from the kitchen — not a draw for most people. The sofa, chairs and TV were tucked away by the fireplace. The challenge was dealing with those dueling focal points: the TV and the fireplace. I suggested simply swapping the living area with the pool table area to redefine the space into two zones. Although the family had decided that they would buy new furniture, they were delighted that in the meantime the room could be made comfortable using what they already owned.
