“To make a small room look larger, I start with a rug that leaves only a narrow bit of floor around the edges of the room. Use a neutral paint color in a medium tone and similar-colored appropriately sized furnishings. Finish off [the room] with accent tables of metal and glass to give a stronger illusion of space. Keep the additions of color to a minimum to keep the room from looking chaotic.”

“In a small den, a sectional that hugs the corners will maximize seating and fill the space. In a small breakfast nook, a table and banquette that perfectly fit a bay window will give you so much more seating for your family than just a table with chairs around it. And in a small powder room, a custom-sized marble sink will maximize counter space and modernize the space.”

“A trick that I use for rooms with a lower ceiling is to hang the drapery rods very close to the ceiling and to use a vertical-patterned material. It draws the eye up and makes the room feel larger.”
