This kitchen was a total transformation. We took the space down to the studs to reimagine its full potential. The homeowners envisioned a space that felt open, inviting, and functional for both daily living and entertaining. Key features on their wish list? Extending the island to accommodate four chairs, adding an entertainment buffet, improving ventilation, and bringing in thoughtful storage solutions like open shelving and reconfigured cabinetry. The inspiration came from a surprising detail—the clients’ tiny butcher block island. We used this element as a springboard for the design, incorporating it into the floating shelves and creating a unique floating round table at the end of the island. The overall vision was to blend the charm of a farmhouse kitchen with an elevated, California-cool aesthetic, resulting in a space that is both timeless and uniquely tailored to the homeowners.

Outdoor Living Space

The property has broad views of the Hudson River and the New Jersey Palisades which provided an obvious backdrop and focal point for the house. Because the land is sloped, the pool and pool cabana are positioned alongside the house, allowing a direct connection from the indoor to outdoor living spaces which orient west to the river views. The outdoor living spaces are anchored by the foundations of a house that was originally built in the 1920s. These walls provide the structural support for the cabana roof which turns away from the street and the neighboring properties and provides a high degree of privacy. The stone walls, which speak to the history of the property, possess a unique material presence alongside the singular expression of the wood cladding of the new walls.

The homeowners wanted a retreat where they could decompress and entertain friends and family. They envisioned a minimalist, nature-inspired design that maximized natural light, showcased the surrounding scenery, and provided a calm, restorative environment. Design details and material choices embrace sustainability, Scandinavian minimalism, passive solar heating and cooling principles, and bringing the outdoors in. The use of natural materials, expansive windows, and thoughtful architectural details creates a harmonious balance. Warm lighting and pops of color through furniture and art enhance the home’s elegance and simplicity, making it truly one with nature.

The vision for this project was to transform a dark, outdated primary bathroom into a bright and airy retreat—a place to both start and end the day with ease and tranquility. The homeowners desired a larger shower area and a standalone soaking tub, which we achieved by strategically angling the tub in the corner to maximize space and functionality.

The palette of black, white, and gray creates a sophisticated yet timeless foundation for the space. Key design features include a custom vanity with ample hidden storage and tailored top-down/bottom-up fabric shades that provide privacy while maintaining outdoor views. To soften the monochromatic tones, we incorporated subtle hues through the window treatments and carefully curated artwork, adding warmth and personality.

Child’s Bedroom

For this child’s room, we built a window seat with storage that took advantage of the existing architecture of the home. The child was able to express her personality through color and hardware—a vibrant magenta paint accented with bow-inspired drawer pulls. The design was an exercise in functionality, but also how to express individual personality with something as simple as the choice of wallpaper and paint.

Mudroom

Cold Spring

Firm: Garrison Foundry, Garrison
Design Pro: Annie Mennes

This project was a joyful collaboration with clients unafraid to embrace color, texture, and bespoke design. The house had great bones, but the interiors lacked character or details that reflected the client’s personality. The mudroom was inspired by the simplicity of Scandinavian and Shaker design, creating an open yet functional space that can set the stage for the aesthetics throughout the rest of the home. A soft green hue and tumbled limestone floor offer warmth and classic charm.
