The Project
Originally, an old garage/barn was to be renovated and given an addition. The homeowners were underway with construction when they saw architect Daniel Contelmo’s work and asked him to help with the project. Included in the scope was a bunk room for the homeowners’ kids and friends as a place to sleep, hang out, socialize, and play games.
The Style
Rustic chic
Details
The family entertains in this space on a regular basis. The bunk room is adjacent to the kitchen/bar/TV room, and both are open to a game room with a pool table. “Even the extended family uses the space for gatherings — it was a wedding venue this past fall,” says Contelmo. The upper bunks are sized for twin mattresses and the lower bunks for full size. On the opposite side of the room (in the shed dormer) is a built-in seat that doubles as a twin bed with a trundle bed below it, so the room can sleep six to eight comfortably.
Essentials
“Bunk rooms are typically for gathering kids together under one roof and meant to be fun,” says Contelmo. “They also need to be versatile. We tend to include options for sleeping while also creating an expressive architecture.”
Materials Used
The bunks were designed with reclaimed barn posts at the corners of the bed. The face frames and ladder were also designed with reclaimed material. The floors are finished with wide-board yellow pine.
Favorite Part
“The lanthorn above the center of the room,” says Contelmo. “It existed originally as a cupola. We rebuilt it and added the windows, which allows natural light to enter from above.”
