Wine-Flavored Ice Cream? Sure, why not?

A trio of Hudson Valley spots are scooping up cocktail-worthy cones

Wine lovers, rejoice—it’s now socially acceptable to get your fix before 5 pm. But we’re not talking about bars and breweries. Instead, we’ve found three local ice cream businesses (yes, ice cream!) taking booze beyond the bottle with vino variations on our favorite summer treat. Raise your cones. Wine ice cream’s here, and we’ve got the scoop.

The Beacon Creamery, 134 Main St., Beacon, (845) 765-0444

Ever gotten carded at a sweets shop? Well, you will at Beacon Creamery. Its Chocolate Cabernet, Cherry Merlot, Strawberry Champagne, and Port flavors—courtesy of Hillary Clinton-approved Mercer’s Dairy in upstate Boonville—each contain five percent alcohol per volume, the equivalent of a light beer, meaning this frozen treat has the potential to get you buzzed. Although owner Ron Iarossi acknowledges, “You’d have to eat a lot of it,” a half-gallon, to be exact. Still, with what’s on offer, it might be hard not to down that much. (But you really shouldn’t.)

Mr. Cannoli 5360 Route 9W, Newburgh, (845) 728-7275

“Ironically, I’m not a drinker,” says Scott Wilkinson, the owner of this boozy-sorbet and Italian-ice distributor. His most popular flavors, Blackberry Shiraz, Blood Orange Prosecco, and Blueberry Cabernet are all natural and low-calorie, meaning you can have your dessert and eat it too. They’re made largely from valley-based bounty, with wines sourced from HV’s best, including nearby Brotherhood Winery, Hudson Valley Distillers, and Demarest Hill Winery. While Mr. Cannoli only sells in bulk to restaurants and distributors, customers above the age of 21 can find these products at The River Grill in Wilkinson’s hometown of Newburgh.

Ice Cream Castle, 5 Powells Ln., Kingston, (845) 514-2527

Set quite literally inside of a castle, this Kingston creamery is where adult ice cream dreams come true. On top of their 22 non-alcoholic varieties, you’ll find six of aforementioned supplier Mercer’s famous wine flavors, including Red Raspberry Chardonnay and Peach White Zinfandel. Whether you head in for a couple of scoops or roll up to the drive-through window for a whole pint, be sure—as in the above instances as well—to bring your I.D.
