Where to Eat Brunch in Winter

In our Winter Survival Guide, we recommend our new favorite brunch spot; here, find five more top-rated places to eat brunch

Arguably the region’s most scenic brunch location, the Thayer Hotel was built in 1926 atop a rocky hill overlooking the Hudson and the United States Military Academy at West Point. The hostelry’s Sunday Champagne brunch buffet features both breakfast and lunch options, from homemade waffles to smoked salmon and fresh beet salad. Satisfying sweets at the dessert station include bananas Foster, strawberries dipped in homemade sauces, and the Thayer’s famous rice pudding. An unlimited supply of Champagne, mimosas, and Bloody Marys rounds out the offerings. (10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. $32.95.)

Known for its 10-page menu, Double O Grill in Wappingers offers many of those options — and more — at the Sunday buffet. Traditional breakfast foods share the bill with a ham-carving station, made-to-order omelettes, prime rib, shrimp cocktail, and a variety of pastas and pastries. For dessert, the apple crisp with homemade whipped cream is a crowd favorite. (Sunday brunch buffet $14.95, kids $9.95, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.)

In Pawling, McKinney and Doyle Fine Foods Cafe sets the bar high for Sunday brunch. With an extensive menu featuring classics like Belgian waffles and chocolate chip pancakes, as well as inventive dishes such as the crab cake burger, it’s no wonder they seat upwards of 300 patrons every Sunday. Everything at McKinney and Doyle — even the bread that accompanies the egg dishes — is homemade, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients. (Saturday & Sunday brunch 9 a.m.-3 p.m. À la carte menu; entrées range from $7-$16.)

The historic Beekman Arms in Rhinebeck dishes out a delectable Sunday spread. Diner cravings are sated with dishes like cinnamon apple pancakes, crabcake Benedict, and vegetable quiche with seafood Hollandaise. Brunch is served in the circa 1766 hotel’s Colonial Tap Room, complete with open hearth fireplace and wood-beamed ceiling. (Sunday brunch 10:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. À la carte menu; entrées range from $9-$15.)

Surrounded by woods and with a roaring fireplace in the dining room, Arch Restaurant in Brewster makes it easy to relax. At Sunday brunch, guests are served a three-course meal, with entrées ranging from coq au vin and Weiner Schnitzel to a Gruyere and cheddar souffle with Parmesan chive sauce that’s perfect for cheese connoisseurs. (Sunday brunch 12-3 p.m. Prix-fixe $39.)
