What You Should Be Drinking On National American Beer Day

What better than a brew with ties to American history?

Ever heard the saying, “beer before liquor, never been sicker”? This spirited brew might just resolve this age-old myth, combining the two with a whiskey infused brown ale beer. We tell all about this genius collaboration between two Valley booze mavens.

The Beer: Newburgh Brewing Company‘s Sergeant Daniel Bissell

The Gist: Released in September, this beer will put you in good spirits. A 5.5% ABV brown ale aged in peated single malt whiskey barrels, it’s the second limited-edition creation of a three-part collaboration with Ancram’s Hillrock Estate Distillery. This exclusive collection can only be purchased in 500 mL bottles at the Newburgh Brewing taproom, so head there and get your share.

The Story: The name is an ode to Newburgh’s politically rich history, honoring one of three Revolutionary War soldiers who were named Badge of Military Merit recipients. The award is a predecessor of today’s Purple Heart Medal, intended to praise enlisted men for their loyal service and heroic acts. It was first granted at the 1782 Continental Army headquarters in Newburgh, where General George Washington stood in command.

So What’s It Taste Like? While distinctive notes of Hillrock’s Peat Single Malt Whisky tone down the beer’s natural hop, classic brown ale flavors like rich coffee, toffee, and chocolate still remain prominent. Slight hints of vanilla can be detected, infused directly from the oak barrels as the beer ages.
