This Week’s Pick: Gala Apple

Share

Gala is the second most popular apple in America. The apple originated in New Zealand and is especially loved by kids and other picky eaters for its mild, but sweet, flavor.

Taste: Mild, sweet, and juicy

Use: Eating, salads, or as a topping for burgers, paninis, and crostinis

Nutritional value: Low in calories, high in water, contains vitamins A, B, and C

Fun fact: Its small size, mellow flavor, thin skin, and resistance to bruising makes the Gala apple a perfect snack for kids. Gala apples are also not targeted by meal worms — hooray!

Availability: September through June
