Picture this: you’re at your favorite local ice cream shop, faltering between flavors at the head of a long line. With a dozen or so trial spoons in your hand, you’re still no closer to making a decision; you narrow it down to two, maybe three varieties, and get a scoop of each. Sure, it sounds like a good solution until you take your ice cream in the sun and are left with a soupy hodge podge of muck. Yuck.
We’ve all been there, but luckily Saugerties’ Alleyway Ice Cream now offers an innovative solution to the age-old problem. They’ve taken the classic flight experience out of the barroom and into the hands of indecisive ice cream lovers everywhere — so you can sample multiple flavors without scoop-on-scoop contact.
If you go, expect flights to include four slightly smaller-than-usual scoops, each served in a separate glass bowl atop a wooden paddleboard, making them perfectly Instagram-able. Just be sure to tag @alleywayicecream in your pics on social, and they’ll honor you a free scoop next time you come by. Flights go for $8, though on Wednesday’s, the shop does a $6 Flight Night promotion.

Flavors rotate by the week, but with menu items like shiso Japanese basil, Poptart, and sweet potato with maple-glazed walnuts, Alleyway is guaranteed to keep things interesting. All ice cream is handmade in small batches using local ingredients from Valley purveyors like Maynard Farms, Lucky Chocolates, and Bluestone Roasting Company (across the street).
Owned by Saugerties native Julian Hom, Alleyway’s near closet-sized shop opened in July, fittingly located in an alleyway off Partition Street. Flight offerings are more recent, though according to Hom, the idea had been churning for a while.
“I was at a brewery last winter and had a flight of beer. My friend and I were talking about ice cream and the idea just hit me,” he said. “Now they’re on the menu, and it seems like we can’t wash the dishes fast enough.”
How could Alleyway possibly get more awesome? Milkshake flights are soon to come.
