Brown’s Brewing CompanyTroyThe granddaddy of Hudson Valley craft breweries. Since 1993, the brewery and pub have seen both the beer business and the formerly seedy neighborhood in which they roost grow ever more robust. They have helped out or employed more than a few fellow brewers down the Valley, while maintaining their spot among the elite beermakers in the Northeast. 417 River Street, Troy

Captain Lawrence Brewing Co.Elmsford Captain Lawrence tapped its first keg at Lucy’s Lounge in 2006. Over the next decade, it moved from Pleasantville to Elmsford, opened a tasting room and bottling line, created a sour ale production wing it calls the Fermento Funk Facility — and celebrated its 10th anniversary last summer as a now nationally recognizable name. Their beer, Cuvee de Castleton, won the first gold medal ever awarded at the Great American Beer Festival in 2007. Producing a core of seven brews augmented by seasonal, specialty, and one-off styles, Captain Lawrence also provides food, music, trivia contests, tours, and a game of bocce or corn hole to its happy customers. 444 Saw Mill River Rd, Elmsford

Hudson Valley BreweryBeaconJohn-Anthony Gargiulo, formerly a camera and dolly “grip” in Hollywood, returned home to open the brewery in an abandoned 19th-century factory. Brewers and co-owners of the operation, Michael Renganeschi and Jason Synan, both previously at the Brewery at Bacchus in New Paltz, run a 30-barrel system that produces eight beers, most of them IPAs or in a sour style. These are currently available in the 60-seat tasting room. The factory’s third floor, an expansive, vaulted, brick-and-wood-beamed space, will eventually host events. 7 East Main St., Beacon

Rare Form Brewing CompanyTroy Kevin Mullen and his wife, Jenny Kemp, opened Rare Form Brewing to combine his interest in home brewing with hers in art. “Rare” connotes his small-batch, uniquely flavored recipes, and “form” speaks to her artwork, which adorns many of the labels and posters that decorate their downtown Troy taproom. Mullen’s five-barrel system keeps five main beers in regular rotation, including Sabbatical Session Ale, Sexy Beats IPA, and Satan’s Gut Imperial Stout — named after a Colorado River rapid that Mullen rode during his days as a whitewater rafting guide. Its “Scale Up” program allows neophyte brewers to submit recipes and brew them on Rare Form’s system. 90 Congress Street, Troy
