The Baker’s Tale crafts classic confections and Mad Batters gluten-free treats alike from its bakery shop in the Hudson Valley.
It was sad to see Mad Batters Pastries & Café leave Marlboro, but now the bakery is back and better than ever in its whimsical Highland location, The Baker’s Tale.
Upon entering the bakery, visitors will feel as if they’ve stepped into a fairytale. The décor includes a sign that reads “Be Our Guest” and an Alice in Wonderland painting, among other whimsical characteristics.
As far as the treats go, some of the most decadent sweets to satisfy your cravings from the start include the triple decker brownies, apple turnovers, and freshly made croissants. All include Hudson Valley Fresh eggs and milk, with any apples coming from Wilklow Orchards.
For those familiar with Mad Batters’ previous offerings, The Baker’s Tale keeps it fresh with new additions to the menu, including options for those without a gluten allergy, such as fresh-baked breads and delicious breakfast options. On the morning commute, locals can stop for a “Husky Bowl” (named after the Highland Huskies, the Highland High School mascot), a delectable breakfast bowl combination with seasoned home fries, eggs, bacon, cheddar, chives, and sour cream.
Even though there are products made with gluten-containing ingredients, breakfast options can all be made gluten-free. And owner Kristin Bell (who is gluten-intolerant herself) takes cross-contamination very seriously. There are two separate kitchens, one of which is dedicated to gluten-free offerings, and each has its own utensils and sinks. The gluten-free products have their own dedicated shelves as well.
And if you aren’t gluten-free but have another allergy concern? The Baker’s Tale has you covered! It maintains strict cleaning practices and is happy to address any concerns patrons may have.
Bell opened The Baker’s Tale in December 2021 to continue the legacy that her mother Alice created.
“It was always my mom’s dream to have a café; she was a chef. After we outgrew just having wholesale, I was able to open our Marlboro location to give my mom her dream,” Bell says.
After Alice’s passing in 2019, Bell decided to give up the original location to focus on wholesale for a while. She wanted to do something different once she decided to open a storefront again. “I named it The Baker’s Tale as in a fairytale and chose to paint the bakery colors that remind me of a Disney castle.”
Bell hopes to create a welcoming community with her bakery, just as her mother Alice wanted. Many of the recipes are inspired by Alice.
“It is very nostalgic for me to create these recipes, because my mother and I used to make them together,” Bell notes.
