Ride, eat, help

A weekend cycling event raises funds for local farmers.

An early summer morning spent biking along country lanes surrounded by farmland. The afternoon spent enjoying a barbecue at one of those farms, with live music, kids’ activities, a farm market, and brews in the beer garden.

Can you think of a better way to spend a Valley Sunday?

Described by organizers as “a party on wheels,” the Farm to Fork Fondo invites cyclists to spin their way through Orange County’s rural “black dirt” region, which is home to numerous farms and orchards—including Pennings Farm, one of said organizers and host of the barbecue. Not a Tour de France qualifier? No sweat: Pedalers can choose from among four ride distances (from the challenging 87-mile Gran Fondo to the much-less-exhausting 12-mile Ramble Ride). Following the morning’s workout, you’ll chow down on a grilled feast featuring ingredients produced on the farms you just rode past. On-site activities include a bike fix-up station and local and cycling-industry vendors; kids have their own Mini-Fondo and can giggle at the barnyard animals while slurping a cone from the ice cream stand. Proceeds benefit Orange County’s farmers, many of whom own less than 50 acres of land. (Non-bikers are welcome at the barbecue, too.)
