Visit These Exceptional Eateries on a Dining Day Trip to Rhinebeck

Sneakily rising through the ranks, Rhinebeck has evolved from a bucolic village with a few exceptional venues into a full-blown dining destination.

Yes, there are four Bread Alone cafés throughout the Hudson Valley; no, that doesn’t make this Rhinebeck location any less exceptional. Coffee and quick bites like pastries can be ordered at the counter, while in the back you can sit down in the full-service dining room. The menu is brief, but sure to please. There are classics like a bacon, egg, and cheese, but why stop there when you can upgrade to a bacon, egg, and arugula with cherry tomato, romesco, and pain au levain? French toast and pancakes are also available, and for brunchers there are a variety of salads as well as a vegan-friendly Bahn Mi.

Just in the mood for juice? Head to Sunflower Café and Juice Bar in Sunflower Natural Foods Market, where juices, smoothies, and shots (of ginger or immune booster) steal the show. Plus, get some shopping done with weekly Tuesday produce sales while you’re at it.

If you’re not vegan — or even vegan-friendly — head over to Rhinebeck Bagels, where the menu reads “Enjoy Life, Eat Bacon.” We can guarantee you’ve never had bagels like these before: Whether you order a Reuben or a Sinker (bacon, sausage, eggs, cheddar and American cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, and mayo), the name of the game here is indulge. (P.S. There are vegan options at Rhinebeck Bagels, and the staff is friendly to everyone.)

Three-time Best of Hudson Valley winner, Aroi Thai Restaurant, has tons of delicious choices for dinner, but the reduced lunch menu also has reduced prices ($10 entrees? Heck yes!). The list of lunch offerings may be shortened, but you’ll find the staples like pad Thai, pad see ew, and the assortment of curries oh-so-satisfying.

Across the street from Aroi Thai is Aba’s Falafel, a farmers’ market favorite that fortunately also has a brick and mortar space. A bare-bones menu of the fried chickpea patties and variations thereof is served in a cozy, living room atmosphere. Order a Turkish coffee and homemade baklava for a bittersweet finish to the meal.

If you’re traveling with the family, head to the Southern edge of town, where Smoky Rock BBQ churns out enough food for all of your relatives — we’re talking cousins twice-removed. Combo platters at this Rhinebeck restaurant come with up to five meats and five sides, and the full rack of ribs averages over two and a half pounds. Smoky Rock puts a tremendous amount of effort into wood-smoking its ribs, chicken, sausage, turkey, duck, brisket, pork belly, and perhaps the gold standard, pastrami, which gets a 14-day brine. Go ahead, wipe your mouth.

According to you, our readers, the best Indian cuisine in the Valley is also in Rhinebeck. Rather than serve an Americanized buffet of Indian food, Cinnamon provides customers with a provincial dining experience. Each menu item explains the region or influence (British, Pakistani, etc.) under which the dish was developed. Chaminda and Shiwanti Widyarathna take their cuisine a step further by serving organic chicken, halal lamb, and baked-from-scratch naan. The gorgeous restaurant design is the perfect match for clean, modern presentations of traditional Indian dishes.

Come dinner time, Rhinebeck hits full swing. Gigi’s Trattoria serves local “Hudson Valley Mediterranean” cuisine like tagliatelle Bolognese with beef from Meiller Farm and chicken tagine with Moroccan spices and braised cauliflower in a bright and spacious atmosphere. The pride and joy of this Rhinebeck restaurant, however, is the Skizza — a flatbread pizza so thin and crispy it can be eaten as an appetizer.

Across the street, Terrapin looms with its 200-year-old Gothic steeple. Voted Best Farm-to-Table Restaurant and Best Dutchess County Restaurant in our 2018 awards, Terrapin appeals to a wide range of diners by providing a variety of experiences. Elegant and modern, the Rhinebeck restaurant’s main dining room offers entrees like horseradish-crusted, sushi-grade Ahi tuna with miso aioli and grilled lamb chop with chimichurri. If you’re looking for a more informal dinner, grab a bite at the Red Bistro, where you can build your own sandwich (think burgers, grilled chicken, and sliced steak). The kitchen here is open late into the night, so Terrapin is a great spot to hang out for drinks, too.

Francophiles should head to Le Petit Bistro, where the succinct menu will make gourmands rejoice. Quaint wood paneling sets the tone for starters like oysters and escargot or Fondue Bruxelloise. For the main course, there are a variety of classic steak options from frites to au poivre, not to mention half roast duckling with sauce du jour. When it’s time for dessert, choose from crème brulée, house-made ice cream, and profiteroles — or don’t choose at all. We won’t tell.

A centuries-old landmark, The Beekman Arms and Delamater Inn is instantly recognizable once you hit the Market Street and Mill Street intersection, but the on-site restaurant is also worth a look. Head to The Tavern at The Beekman Arms for a menu that bridges old-world game like Dutch pot pie with trends of the moment like Faroe Island salmon.

Of course, then there’s 2017’s Best New Restaurant, The Amsterdam. Don’t get us wrong: The Amsterdam is an excellent choice for dinner — seasonal, farm-to-table fare with light French influence — but come warm weather, there’s nothing nicer than hanging out in the courtyard for a drink. Grab one of the signature house cocktails (all crafted and balanced with only three ingredients), and gather ’round the fire pit or the bocce court for a memorable night with friends at this Rhinebeck restaurant.

For a colorful confection, there’s no spot more vibrant than Samuel’s Sweet Shop. Walls are lined with packaged goodies and scratch-made treats like Next Level Sensations: a peppermint patty sandwiched between two double-stuffed Oreos and dipped in dark chocolate. Oh, and don’t forget the baked goods and coffee while you’re at it.
