Now Open for Business: Naked Food Concepts

A new eatery in Poughkeepsie specializes in vegan fare

In the age of pesticides and preservatives, it can be challenging to find food prepared with only the purest, most natural ingredients — naked food, if you will. That’s why Ira Lee — the force behind Poughkeepsie’s popular eatery, Twisted Soul — and two business partners created Naked Food Concepts in January.

The joint is all vegetarian, all vegan, and all gluten-free. That’s right, everything on the menu (except for two cheeses that are used in some salads and can be omitted by request) meet the vegan and gluten-free criteria. Many smoothies ($4-$5.50) are made with tofu instead of dairy products, but retain the creamy consistency of a milk shake. Three types of grain bowls ($8.75) come loaded with vegetables and your choice of brown or quinoa rice. The ever-popular sweet potatoes ($8.75), similar to the traditional loaded baked potato, are served with dairy-free sour cream.

And dessert options include vegan ice cream in flavors like Turkish chocolate coffee and pina colada (there’s a vegan lemon cheesecake, too). Those who have been diagnosed with gluten intolerance and are adjusting to their new dietary needs have become steadfast patrons — as have dedicated vegans and vegetarians looking for quick dining options. And even carnivores in the mood for a quick, healthy snack are frequenting the place.
