The retro-casual Crumb Bakery & Café in Beacon started out as just a cookies-and-coffee place in 2010. But, after rave reviews for their baked goods started pouring in, they decided to expand into a full-blown café. The menu is small — they offer just a few sandwiches and salads for lunch — but each dish is crafted to perfection.

While the Beef & Brie rightfully has a legion of loyal fans, we think that owners Tanner Townsend and Victor Lucio (both Culinary Institute grads) knocked it out of the park with their Chipotle Cheddar creation. “One of the key ingredients that sets it apart from many other sandwiches is our house-made white bread,” says Townsend. “We then add a layer of spicy chipotle mayo and top that with sweet caramelized onions. A fresh slice of locally grown tomato and several strips of crispy smoked bacon follow, then it’s finished with two slices of extra sharp cheddar cheese. We press it for several minutes to heat it through, melt the ingredients together, and give it a crispy golden-brown outside.” The sandwich has a kick to it, but a house-made Vanilla Lemonade — made with fresh-squeezed lemons and real vanilla bean — is the perfect cooling complement. Enjoy your sandwich in the delightful backyard.
