Veg-heads rejoice! Bread Alone Bakery and Café in Boiceville — with outposts in Woodstock and Rhinebeck — offers a meat-free sandwich that’s way better than your run-of-the-mill leafy-green dish. The Veggies Alone awakens your taste buds with a thin layer of quince paste, ricotta salata eggplant, roasted red peppers, and arugula between two slices of the bakery’s Certified Organic 9 Mixed Grain bread. The quince fruit has a sweet taste that contrasts well with the salty ricotta, and the peppery arugula is tamed by the nuttiness of the mixed grain bread. “We think people appreciate that we enjoy making a non-meat-based meal that doesn’t skimp on flavorful, quality vegetables,” says Sharon Burns-Leader, who co-owns the renowned café and bread-baking empire with her husband Daniel Leader. “Seasonally we purchase locally grown Japanese eggplant, which we marinate and grill. Also, a friend of the bakery gives us 20-30 pounds of locally grown quince every year that we make into a paste and use until it runs out.” If an item they sell isn’t locally sourced, they try to ensure it’s at least sustainably harvested and/or organic. Teas are made by Hudson Valley blend masters Harney & Sons, and coffee is by Counter Culture, “which we think is one of the best roasters in the country,” she says. “We enjoy creating healthy, tasty food and we always try to do so in a globally sustainable manner: We treat our staff well, we purchase our ingredients from producers we know and trust, and we respect and value our customers.”
