Restaurant Openings and Closings and Hudson Valley Food and Dining News in November 2013

News and notes from the Valley’s dining scene in November 2013: A favorite Rockland restaurant opens a new outpost, and a dynamic dining duo returns to Poughkeepsie

Devoted fans of Haverstraw’s Union Restaurant were thrilled when the owners opened a sister establishment, UNoodles Snack Bar, just down the road. While Union focuses on high-end Latin fusion dishes, the new joint has international cuisine selections. Patrons love the yucca hush puppies, trout tapenade (trout fillet with Kalamata olives), and the Piggy Bowl: ramen noodles, pulled pork, napa cabbage, and hard-boiled egg in a pork broth. While the appropriately U-shaped bar adds to the casual atmosphere, it’s the common table — fashioned from a former bowling alley lane — that re-enforces the communal feel. Says owner Paulo Feteira: “You can come on a date or for a private thing, but you always have people around you. It’s all very social.” 845-947-7625; www.unoodles.net

The DeLuccia family — formerly of LaGrange’s Nic L Inn and the Lynick House — couldn’t stay out of the restaurant biz for long. Mother-daughter team Lynette and Nicolette opened Poughkeepsie’s Nic L Inn Wine Cellar (Nicolette and Lynette, get it?) at the end of August. The new establishment, which boasts a 250-bottle wine wall in the lounge, sits on the waterfront beneath the Walkway Over the Hudson. The primarily Italian menu includes seven regular dishes created using house-made pasta, with many ingredients provided by local farms. But the most interesting feature is the self-serve wine dispenser: Guests purchase tokens at the wine bar, insert them into the dispenser, select a wine, and viola! The machine pours you a glass. 845-452-5649; www.nliwinecellar.com
