Now Open for Business: Pyro Gyro

A new Greek eatery in Poughkeepsie offers fare for $10 or less

Looking for a taste of the Greek islands? Look no further than the newly opened Pyro Gyro in Poughkeepsie. An offshoot of the local Four Brother’s Pizza chain, the eatery started serving hungry patrons in March and hosted an official grand opening last month. Since then, “I haven’t really seen anybody just once — pretty much everyone has turned into a regular customer,” says owner John Stefanopoulos.

The gyros here are the real deal: They’re made with either pork or chicken, not lamb, which — contrary to popular belief — is the authentic Greek tradition, Stefanopoulos says. A sandwich retails for $6.99 and has tomatoes, red onions, French fries, and your choice of tzatziki, spring, or tirokafteri sauce, all bundled snugly in pita bread. If you want to skip the bread, the kitchen also makes souvlaki (the same ingredients, just served on a skewer) for the same price; a full platter (with fries, etc.) is $10.99. There are also salads ($6.75 to $7.75) and the Greek fried dough called loukoumades ($3.50).

All meats, poultry, and dairy products come from local farms, and the olive oil is imported directly from Greece. The Grecian theme extends to the decor, with its white stucco walls, exposed stone, blue shutters, and blue and white tables. “We’re trying to make it like if you were to walk into a gyro place in Greece, this is exactly what you would get,” Stefanopoulos says. To which we say, kudos.
