New Restaurants and Hudson Valley Food and Dining News for November 2012

News and notes from the Valley’s dining scene for November 2012

Jennifer Clair wants to teach you how to eat. The chef/owner of Home Cooking New York — a school that offers individual or small-group culinary lessons in Clair’s Beacon kitchen — celebrates the business’s 10th anniversary with “How to Eat: A Crash Course in Food Education.” The November 14 tutorial provides tips on how to be supermarket savvy (understanding your choices in the meat and produce aisles, deciphering those food labels); gives you the skinny about fat, salt, and sugar; and explains why the “eat local” trend is one you should follow. In September, Ancram’s Hillrock Estate Distillery debuted its Solera Aged Bourbon, crafted using grains grown on the property; a single malt whiskey was set to be released just as we went to press. Jeffrey Baker, who owns the field-to-glass distillery, has enlisted the services of Master Distiller Dave Pickerell, who spent 14 years at Maker’s Mark… Puccini, the traditional Italian on Rhinebeck’s Garden Street, also has new blood: CIA grad Adam Monteverde, formerly of Grimaldi’s Pizzeria in New Paltz, is now manning the stove there… DeCicco Family Markets, a Westchester/Putnam/Rockland County food purveyor, opened its ninth location on Harrison’s Halstead Avenue in September. The 40-year-old chain of family-owned and operated stores offers everything from stone fruit to sushi, although they are renowned for their selection of cheeses and beer from throughout the world.
