The Hudson Valley is no stranger to accolades in the culinary world. From racking up multiple nominations and winners for James Beard Award categories to taking home platinum for the Craft Beer Marketing Awards, the food professionals in the region are often recognized for their talents — and for good reason.
Now, the Hudson Valley can add one more award to its ever-expanding list with the inclusion of a very special Ulster County bar on Esquire‘s list of the “Best Bars in America” in 2024. Can you guess which one it is?

It’s Mirador in Kingston!
Published on May 30, Esquire‘s list nestles Mirador among the New York City and Los Angeles greats, proving that Kingston, and the Hudson Valley as a whole, is building its own brand of nightlife and culinary excellence that rivals that of the nation’s largest cities.
Inspired by the tabancos, or taverns, of Andalucia in Southern Spain where owner, singer-songwriter, and sherry lover Nick Africano received much of his education, the Kingston bar blends the bounty of the Hudson Valley into both its cocktail and tapas menus. As an expert in sherry wines, Africano’s passion lies in curating and showcasing regional wines from Andalucia, where sherry is one of the most famous varietals.

“Thanks to Africano’s boundless enthusiasm and granular knowledge of the subject, if you have questions, you’ll come away with a deeper appreciation for the different styles, and their history, and how these wines mesh with the soulful and precisely executed menu of tapas and small plates,” writes Peter Barrett, Esquire contributor.
In addition to sherry, Mirador highlights a selection of top wines from all parts of Spain, along with world-class vermouths and specially crafted cocktails. Tapas and plates like queso made with New York goat milk, hay-smoked butter and bread from Kingston Bread + Bar, patatas bravas with fingerling potatoes from Athens’ Black Horse Farms, and a jamon burger with a Fletcher & Lu milk bun are just a few of the bar’s delicious options that pay homage to the Hudson Valley. Isolation Proof gin, Neversink rye, and brews from Dutchess Ales, Catskill Brewery, and Equilibrium Brewery round out some of the locally sourced beverages on the bar menu.

Just like the pubs of England and the taverns of America, Mirador seeks to be a friendly, lively place of community gathering for anyone and everyone to enjoy food, drinks, and cultural experiences.
Mirador is located at 636 Broadway in Kingston.
