This 9W favorite has been delighting customers since 1954, when it opened as a Carvel franchise and ice cream was served car-side on roller skates. In 1959 it was taken out of franchise, and received its current name in the late ’60s in honor of then-owner Mary Jane Reggerio. Today, owner Margaret Gallo — who grew up in the ice cream business — serves some of the best hard ice cream around. The 36 homemade flavors use real ingredients and the original recipes from the ’70s. In the fall, Gallo makes ice creams inspired by the two of the season’s most popular pies: apple and pumpkin. Apple has real pieces of apple pie crumbled into vanilla ice cream. Mary Jane’s menu features tons of other classics including soft-serve ice cream, sundaes with homemade brownies and shortcakes, chipwiches, shakes, blender benders, burgers, gyros, chili-cheese fries, and more. There are even “Puppy Snackers,” an ice cream sandwich for your dog.
