Lunch at a Gas Station? You Bet.

At Flory’s Gas, Convenience & Deli in Dutchess and Putnam Counties, you can indeed fill up your gas tank, and grab a bite to eat all in one spot.

The unofficial start of the summer travel season will soon be upon us with Memorial Day Weekend, and as we set out on roadtrip adventures, we’ll surely be looking for sustenance and gas stations to fill up our cars while we’re on the road. Why not combine these two needs and dine at a gas station?

That’s just what I did at Flory’s Gas, Convenience & Deli in East Fishkill. Recently featured in The New York Times, Flory’s is an homage to the service centers of yore, replete with an old-fashioned gas pump and retro Mobil signs inside. Odes to New York landmarks dot the ceiling – such as renderings of Yankee Stadium, the Statue of Liberty and the twinkling lights of the New York City skyline – allowing visitors to pretend they’re dining at someplace offering prime real estate views.

When my husband and I pulled into the parking lot, we saw three people eating outside. Ah – al fresco dining! And there’s a drive-through. We decided to eat inside – luckily there was a table for two available, and we didn’t have to go on OpenTable or Resy to score a seat.

Wandering around Flory’s, I was dazzled by the liquid refreshments available to me. There’s all manners of craft beer, milkshakes, a cappuccino machine, a variety of iced teas, and of course a range of coffee choices. I opted for an old-fashioned fountain soda while my husband had an unsweetened iced tea.

The menu choices are varied, ranging from familiar breakfast sandwiches to creatively-named lunch options such as The Messy Picnic or Tasty Bull, to classic Nathan’s hot dogs rotating on a grill. I went with a grilled chicken on a whole-wheat tortilla, with avocado, lettuce, and tomato while my husband ordered the cheesesteak. There are no shortage of sides to accompany your meal: crunchy potato chips, gluten-free pretzels, and beef jerky can all be found.

We noshed on our sandwiches at our window seat, catching the scenery of cars filling up and people walking in and out with sundries.

Our next big decision was dessert – we opted to be virtuous and skip dessert during our visit, but make sure to leave room for the myriad ice cream offerings, organic cookies, and candy concoctions from the Pucker Power Candy Machine.

You can definitely “Fill ‘er up,” at Flory’s – the quality and prices are pretty good, and the selection is pretty dazzling. With four local locations (besides the East Fishkill stop, there’s one in Fishkill, Hopewell Junction, and Mahopac), there’s plenty of Flory’s to go around.
