Lagusta’s Luscious Commissary!

Lagusta Yearwood charms the vegan community and beyond with the creative confections inside her culinary outpost in New Paltz.

Lagusta’s Luscious Commissary! is a vegan haven for foodies trying to find their fix—but it just may become your new favorite eatery, regardless of your dietary preferences.

No stranger to the area or the food business, Lagusta Yearwood opened this sister shop to her artisanal chocolate confectionery of the same name this past spring. She and her partner, Jacob Feinberg-Pyne, established the space as a way to focus on all the things they wanted to do, but didn’t have the space for at the eponymous storefront down the road.

The result is a cozy, cheerfully colored café specializing in brewed beverages and small bites made using vegan and ethically sourced ingredients. The owners bring the same spirit and care to the Commissary! as they do to the chocolate shop. “We especially liked the idea of treating coffee like we treat chocolate at Lagusta’s Luscious—with an eye for high-quality, ethical beans that are treated well.”

Yearwood also has a keen interest in social justice, and is incorporating those sentiments into her business blueprint. “We’re really conscious of the fact that using high-quality ingredients that are bought fairly means that our prices can be higher than usual,” says Yearwood. And that’s how the “socialist sliding-scale soup special” came to be. Although Commissary! suggests $5 for their savory stocks, customers can enjoy these creations even when they’re short on cash.  Commissary! showcases an on-a-whim menu (Yearwood goes by what’s in season and “works with it”), featuring savory foods and baked goods alike. Guests can stop by at breakfast for their fresh, dairy-free sourdough bialys or for a midday meal that includes options like pickle plates and cashew-based, vegan cheese platters. Delectable chocolate beverages are always on order, along with a variety of fresh fruit slushies.

The positive vibes don’t stop with the complimentary soup: The “Mitzvah Wall” is a pay-it-forward project in which strangers can purchase a snack for someone in advance (i.e., “One nitro coffee for a graduate student in debt”) and add their good deed to the wall. Next time you pass by, take a minute to peruse the papers pinned to the wall; you might be entitled to a treat free of charge thanks to the kindness of someone you’ve never met.
