Joshua’s Café, Woodstock

One of our best places to eat breakfast in 2014: Joshua’s Café, Woodstock

Olives for breakfast? At Joshua’s CafeÌ in Woodstock, the morning meal takes on a Middle Eastern accent. With most entreÌes in the $9 to $11 range, you can savor a fabulous meal prepared by CIA-trained chef/owner Stefanie Schachter without breaking your New Year’s resolution to save money. The Israeli breakfast of eggs with house salad, feta cheese, hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, and warm pita is a local legend. Eggs Almost Benedict, with its luscious lemony hollandaise sauce, is another best-seller, so named because the poached eggs are served on a bed of baby spinach (not an English muffin) and come with bacon instead of ham.

Vegan or not, you’ll love the organic tofu scramble, which is served with a choice of two fresh vegetables, multigrain toast, and home fries. Try the Turkish coffee, brought to your table in a traditional copper ibrik (the pot it’s brewed in) with a small espresso cup to serve yourself. A strong brew flavored with cardamom pods, it’s guaranteed to turbo-charge your day. In the winter months, it’s pretty easy to snag a seat for breakfast at this 80-seat cafe — but take your time. They don’t open until 11 a.m. on weekdays (10 a.m. on weekends). 845-679-5533; www.joshuascafe.com
