Il Portico Ristorante, Tappan, NY: Northern Italian Food in Rockland County

Northern Italian dining at Il Portico Ristorante in Tappan, NY

Built as a stagecoach stop and hotel in the 1850s, Il Portico — or “the porch” — is one of Tappan’s several National Historic Landmarks. Today, the building houses a restaurant that specializes in fine Northern Italian cuisine served in a quaint, romantic atmosphere. Lunch choices range from classic chicken parmigiana (breaded with mozzarella and tomato) to gnocchi bursting with mussels, cherry tomatoes, zucchini, and a light sauce.

At dinner, seafood lovers can enjoy Capellini Frutta di Mare — a combination of shrimp, clams, mussels, and fish bathed in tomato broth — or lobster ravioli with fresh herbs and butter. For land options, try the pappardelle with a veal shank ragu; chicken tenderloin with sausage, lemon, garlic, rosemary, and white wine; or mini rigatoni topped with eggplant, mushrooms, tomatoes, and ricotta.

Open for lunch Mon.-Fri., dinner daily. Lunch $12.50-$16; dinner entreés $17-$29.50.
