Hurricane Irene: New York and Hudson Valley Survival Guide (What to Do When the Power is Out)

A Hudson Valley foodie’s guide to surviving Hurricane Irene

Hurricane Irene is expected to hit New York’s Hudson Valley by Sunday, with residents doing everything they can to prepare: planning evacuation routes, double-checking batteries and battery-operated radios, buying bottled water, and stocking up on non-perishable food items.

Whether Irene comes at us with her best Category 3 game face or a wimpy sprinkle of rain, one thing’s for sure: You’ll be stuck indoors. The kids’ll get bored. And everyone’s going to attack the kitchen cabinets in search of snacks.

Now we’re not saying Twinkies aren’t decent hurricane-survival treats — if anything can be classified as “non-perishable,” it’s a Twinkie — but if you’d rather chase a tornado than feast upon preservative-loaded sponge cakes, here’s our list of top five foods to eat while the power is out during a hurricane.
