On August 2, extreme sports enthusiasts and oenophiles come together for the inaugural Hudson Valley Vino and the Beasts obstacle course race at Millbrook Vineyards and Winery. The creation of Finger Lakes-based company Beast Mode Athletics, the five-kilometer race is one of four such events happening on the East Coast (others are in Ohio, Connecticut, and the Finger Lakes).
Participants must leap over wine barrels, crawl through mud and underneath wires, complete a sack race, and scale a mountain of hay bales, among other challenges, before being rewarded with a complimentary wine tasting at the finish line — although water stations along the course will have some wine samples, too.
A contest to find the best “beastly” costume and live musical performances also take place during the tasting.
Beasts take off at 2 p.m. Pre-registration is required; admission fee is $75. www.vinoandthebeasts.com/events/2014-hudson-valley-ny
