Hudson Valley Farmers Markets Open in Winter

Forget hibernation: The Hudson Valley’s farmers markets offer produce all winter long

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you must forgo fresh produce — not to mention the sense of community derived from schmoozing — at your local farmers market. “Kale, cabbage, collards, and Brussels sprouts are picked until the first deep freeze and snow cover,” says Josh Morgenthau of Fishkill Farms in Hopewell Junction. “And potatoes, carrots, apples, and other root vegetables can keep in cold storage through March.” Winter farm markets are alive and well in the region, offering these hardy veggies as well as micro greens, New York maple syrup, and wines from local vineyards. Many markets also sell diverse wares from area vendors and artists, and some even host family-friendly events.
