It’s the kind of sandwich that would make Archie’s pal Jughead drool: six cheese-smothered patties interspersed between seven bun halves, topped by slices of red onions, tomatoes, a few lettuce leaves (to make you feel a little healthier), and sporting a sliced pickle crown. Standing about 15 inches tall, this behemoth burger isn’t for the faint of heart (or high of cholesterol). But if you take the Burger Boyz Challenge and can eat the whole thing in 20 minutes — along with an order of fries and a beverage of your choice — your meal’s on the house. (You’ll also receive a Burger Boyz tee shirt, not to mention bragging rights.) If it turns out your eyes are bigger than your stomach, the meal costs $19.99 and your photo is posted in the Hall of Shame for all to see. “Only eight people have finished the challenge,” says Anthony Guido, who co-owns the eatery with Franco Fidanza. “The fastest eater finished in nine minutes and 58 seconds. He might have been a competitive eater though, that’s not the usual finish time.”
From the outside, Burger Boyz might look like your typical flashy fast-food joint; it’s not. Meals are made fresh per order — no frozen, processed mystery meat. “We make almost everything in-house, from chicken tenders to French fries, and the meat we use for burgers is delivered every two days, freshly ground to our specs, with no preservatives or additives. The only thing we add is a little bit of salt; we’d rather have the meat’s natural flavor come through,” says Guido.
Those not hungry enough to try the challenge can order a normal-sized single, double, or triple burger with basic toppings — lettuce, tomato, mayo, ketchup, pickles — or customized toppings such as relish, grilled onions, mushrooms, and other options.
