Hudson Hil’s, Cold Spring

One of our best places to eat breakfast in 2014: Hudson Hil’s, Cold Spring

On a recent chilly afternoon at Hudson Hil’s, a trio of women sat intently over their breakfast (served from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.), baby strollers parked tableside. One was tucking into chocolate babka French toast, the house superstar, topped with fresh berries and espresso cream cheese. Who wouldn’t adore a dish that fills you up while simultaneously satisfying your sweet tooth? Another diner savored gravlax and eggs, a house-cured salmon sliced thin and served with red onion and capers, scrambled eggs, cream cheese, and a cute little bagel. The third was making quick work of her split buttermilk biscuit topped with sausage gravy and served with eggs and potatoes (you could also substitute fruit or avocado slices for $2).

“We try to offer things that people really crave,” says co-owner Hilary Hayes, whose husband, Bob, is the chef. From the enraptured look on her patrons’ faces, it appears to be working. Of course, there are other reasons to love this fresh spot, too, like the market where you can buy pies, cakes, and cookies to go. The soothing, buttery yellow walls, wide-plank floors, and crisp white woodwork create a relaxed, country-rustic atmosphere that also happens to be child friendly. And, perhaps most importantly, because everything is in the $9 to $11 range, you can save your dollars for some antiques shopping in town. 845-265-9471; www.hudsonhils.com
