When we say they’re “a stone’s throw” from the Westchester-Putnam border, don’t test it. You might actually hit a plate of the insanely good barbecue down at Holy Smoke, “New York’s Best BBQ and Craft Beer.”
Opened in 2004, Holy Smoke now has two locations: one in Mahopac, and another in Croton-on-Hudson at 2016 Albany Post Road. Aside from boasting the state’s best barbecue, BeerAdvocate.com currently rates the Holy Smoke craft beer selection as “outstanding,” scoring them a whopping 93/100.
Fall, with all of its delicious seasonal beers and the majesty that is Oktoberfest, is the highlight of many beer aficionados’ calendars. To start things right, Holy Smoke will be hosting its annual Fall Kick-Off Celebration from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 23 at the Mahopac location.
Doors will open at 12:30 to begin processing, bequeathing every entrant a security wristband before ushering them onto the 5.5 acres of lush lawn adjacent to the restaurant. First pour is promptly at 1 p.m., and for the next four hours guests will be entitled to all-they-can-eat barbecue, sides, and seasonally selected craft beer. Patrons will be able to enjoy tastings of various German and American Oktoberfests, pumpkin and wheat beers, IPAs, browns, stouts, even barley wines!
Tickets are available online for $60 (plus fees). Designated drivers can gain access to unlimited food and a water station for only $35, but since alcohol will be freely flowing, all guests must present a valid ID showing they are 21 or older. (If you’re intent on shanghaiing your kids into chauffer duty, pretend they’re a real black car service and have them pick you up after last call.)
