Forage & Gather Market and Café Is a Sullivan County Staple

In Hurleyville and Mountaindale, Forage & Gather Market is a community destination for specialty groceries, grab-and-go meals, and café accoutrements.

Following the successful opening of its flagship location in Mountaindale in 2020, beloved market and café Forage & Gather recently opened a new café in Hurleyville. The market’s expansion comes at an exciting time for the Sullivan County town, as its Main Street is ever-growing with local businesses and additions. Along with unique groceries, gifts, and delectable house-made food, Forage & Gather stocks its shelves with local and handmade treasures in an effort to serve as a destination for community.

For owner Cat Wilson, Forage & Gather wasn’t her first business in the town of Mountaindale. After launching a wine shop inside the space that is now Forage & Gather, Wilson’s neighbors decided to move home during the pandemic, offering her the opportunity to take over the space that would eventually become the market’s café. In addition to her two market locations, Wilson is also the owner of Decant Wine and Spirits in Hurleyville, just two doors down from the new café.

While the Mountaindale Forage & Gather Market was the product of Wilson’s proximity to the area, being burnt out from a previous job, and a growing local population fueled by the pandemic, the Hurleyville café has a different story. “Hurleyville has a beautiful downtown and great retail space, with many established businesses already,” says Wilson, adding that this makes the area the “perfect spot for a great coffee shop.” In fact, Wilson is such a big fan of the town that she plans to move there herself soon.

At both locations, Forage & Gather serves up specialty groceries, beloved breakfast and lunch sandwiches, grab-and-go meal options, and gourmet coffee featuring espresso, drip, and pour-overs made from beans produced by local roaster 2 Queens out of Narrowsburg. For customers, Wilson affirms that the café’s soups and breakfast menu have been fan favorites over the past couple of months since opening, and she hopes to expand the menu soon to include beer, wine, and more as her team builds the new kitchen in Hurleyville.

Along with delectable options on the culinary front, Forage & Gather currently hosts a weekly open mic night on Fridays from 5-8 p.m. and plans to offer more events like wine and cheese pairing classes and bingo nights with fun prizes. In the summer months, the café will stay open late in the evenings, welcoming anyone in the community to hold meetings or gatherings in the new space.

Since the soft opening in November of 2023, Forage & Gather has already received so much support and excitement from its new community in Sullivan County. The Hurleyville location’s grand opening celebration is yet to be determined for spring of this year but is sure to be full of community support. Wilson says, “Hurleyville was already great when we arrived, and we hope to add a little spice and some fantastic coffee to its offerings, and be a great place for people to gather, work, and eat.”
