Foodies Will Love These 2 New Cold Spring Shops

Indulge in creamy cheeses and decadent desserts at the scrumptious riverside storefronts.

It’s a good summer for foodies in the Hudson Valley. Kingston announced the arrival of not one, but three new restaurants while Newburgh and Poughkeepsie added different, yet equally delectable pizzerias to their respective food scenes. Now, Cold Spring is the latest riverside town to add to its culinary roster.

First on the lineup is Cold Spring Cheese Shop, which debuted in town on July 21. The Main Street space, which is family owned and operated, sells a variety of cheeses and charcuterie from its retro black and white interior. Although the shop offers a spectrum of dairy concoctions, its keeps its main focus on Hudson Valley products, like the Farmers Cheese from Chaseholm Farm in Pine Plains.

“We carry about 60 cheeses and we cover most bases,” says co-owner Timothy Haskell.

Repeat visitors are welcome to make requests and ask for recommendations on what to try. In addition to cheese, the store also stocks artisan treats like pasta from Northern Farmhouse Pasta in the Catskills and a curated selection of local and New York State hot sauces. Although the dust from opening day still has to clear, Haskell and his family hope to make the shop a community destination for education, entertainment, and, above all, good food.

“Once a month we are doing ‘Meet the Farmer,’ where I connect with a local cheesemaker and they do an around the world of all their cheeses and talk about them while people taste them all. We are also doing wine and cheese pairings, and maybe even a hot sauce class (another love of mine),” Haskell reveals.

Further along on Main Street, Homestyle Desserts brings double the sweetness with the opening of its second location. The beloved Peekskill bakery, which won a Best of Westchester Readers’ Pick Award for Best Italian Bakery in 2018, quietly announced its expansion into Putnam County on social media back in July. On August 15, the store cut the metaphorical ribbon on its second sugary outpost. Like the original, which has been in business for over 40 years, the new Cold Spring spot sells the over-the-top confections for which the brand is known. Think chocolate chip cookie sandwiches filled with edible cookie dough, homemade waffles stuffed with cannoli cream, and a colorful rainbow cheesecake, to name only a few of the indulgent options.
